Life at Med School
the life of a torn bubble trying to stay afloat

Just came home from Shannon's baby shower. And well, I had a hard time finding stuff to talk about with a bunch of 20-24 women who we all pretty much preparing to be married soon, already married and preparing for their first babies, or already had babies with careers in homemaking. And then there was the group of 40-50 year old women who have spent their lives taking care of their kids (not that it's not a career and I know some people who are really good at it). Honestly, I had more to talk about with the older ladies than the ones around my age. Most of the people there were the overtly overly religious and since I am not one of those people, that was another thing I couldn't really connect on. And my humor isn't really churchy people type humor. I did see two other people affiliated with the med school (wives of med students) so I was able to talk with them since I knew them better. Geez, I need to make some more non medical field friends. And I realized that there are alot of really cool baby things out there. Oh and I won a sparkly candle. Well, back to studying. No word yet on whether or not I have to go in tomorrow.

Yawn...I'm tired. Usually I zone out and somewhat rest during lectures but today I had to present during the personality disorder lecture and then the second lecturer did something crazy, almost disturbing actually. He memorized what we all looked like from our pictures we took in 1st year (I HATE that picture of me) and memorized some random fact about us and then would randomly call on us and make some reference to the fact. I escaped that but because he was calling out names randomly to get opinions on what he just said, kind of had to pay attention. Dave didn't care since he passed out as usual and got called on it several times. It was so funny but I guess you had to be there.
And I'm tired of doing neuro exams on unresponsive comatose patients and patients who don't follow commands. I mean, how much of an effort should I really make to do the entire exam on a man who is awake but doesn't follow commands anyway. The residents said, "Cara, you need a patient that's awake don't you?" And I said, "yes! it would be nice to do a full exam for a change!" and what do I get, a stroke victim with a glass eye who intermittently follows commands and his wife who is a little hazy on the details. He may be awake but it's no different than my 2 coma patients that have kids who want to sue the asses off the doctors who made them that way. In my opinion, the one doctor deserves to get sued - he made a mistake that we learn not to make as third year students before the opportunity even arises to make such a mistake - does that make sense? eh, like I care if it doesn't. Hmmm...apathy, bitterness, and spite...yep, medicine is having a WONDERFUL effect on my life!

Hee hee hee! I love this character! If it weren't for the fact that the merchandise is horribly overpriced I would buy the PJs that have this happy bunny:

How is it possible that the one service that I'm not exposed to sick (as in physical and not mental illness) people, I get sick. Well, I'm not really really sick but I have nasal congestion that required a few doses of Sudafed and I feel somewhat crappy today.
In other news, I saw a bunch of people get electroconvulsive therapy this morning. I even got to give the meds (anesthesia and muscle relaxants) and push the button to start the seizure on one of the patients. I think they could tell we were getting bored. It's nothing like the movies because they give the muscle relaxants so that during the ECT induced grand mal seizure there isn't any flailing about but the patient gets stiff and the hands and feet move a little.
Oh and Apple Computer celebrated 20 years of the Macintosh Computer over the weekend so they redid the original commercial that aired during the superbowl 20 years ago and the runner now wears an iPOD. Made me chuckle a little.
Time to blow my nose...again

So I was listening to a few sample available in the itunes music store and I came across Rufus Wainwright. He did a beatles cover for the movie "i am sam." By the way, if you haven't seen that movie, I recommend it. Reminded me of some of the people I worked with in Eugene before I started med school. Anyway, he and I share the same birthday (he's 4 years older though) so I felt obliged to listen to a few of the songs and I love them! So when I get my next financial aid check, I may have to buy an album of his. Anyway, here are a couple of his songs and you can have fun looking around at the website where I got them from.

Rufus Wainwright
Oh What a World: This song includes a portion of Ravel's "Boléro". Very cool song
Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk: I like the sound of this song.

By the way, the songs require that you have the RealAudio player so you may have to download the software (free) to listen but it's worth it!
